The Tacoma Latino Chamber of Commerce hosted the 2025 Tacoma Mayoral Election Debate, featuring candidates John Hines and Anders Ibsen. The event served as an important civic forum, offering the Latino business community and local residents the opportunity to hear directly from both candidates about their vision for Tacoma’s future, their economic priorities, and their plans to support small and minority-owned businesses.
The debate was moderated by Marcos Wanless, President and Founder of the Seattle and Tacoma Latino Chambers of Commerce, who emphasized the importance of maintaining open communication between public officials and the Latino community. In his opening remarks, Wanless highlighted the significant contributions of Latinos to the U.S. economy, noting that Latinos collectively generate over $4.3 trillion annually, and that Latina women are the fastest-growing group of new business owners in the nation. He also pointed out that individuals working under ITIN registrations contribute more than $4.5 billion in taxes each year, supporting programs such as Social Security, even though many may never directly benefit from them.
Throughout the discussion, the candidates addressed key issues including affordable housing, public safety, education, economic growth, and collaboration with state and federal leaders. One of the central topics was the Workers’ Bill of Rights, an initiative proposing expanded protections for workers while raising questions about potential cost implications for employers and small businesses.
The debate also examined the issue of Latino representation in local government. Despite being one of the fastest-growing segments of Tacoma’s business community, Latino entrepreneurs continue to face barriers in accessing contracts, capital, and participation in city decision-making. Both candidates expressed their commitment to ensuring that Latino business leaders have a meaningful voice in shaping the city’s economic policies.
The event concluded with closing remarks from both candidates, who thanked the Tacoma Latino Chamber of Commerce for organizing a space that fosters civic engagement and direct dialogue with the Latino community.
The Chamber encouraged attendees to stay informed and participate in the upcoming November 5 elections, emphasizing that informed civic participation is vital to building “a stronger and more inclusive economy for everyone in Tacoma.”
The Tacoma Latino Chamber of Commerce reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Latino business owners, promoting equitable economic development, and strengthening collaboration between local government and the Latino business community.
